Japanese Beetles

July 25, 2006

Japanese beetles are tommorrow’s Grub as the ad in the newspaper stated and it continued with that they will eggs int the ground and become lawn destroying Grubs.

I think they have a pretty top shell (actually their wings) brown/green and a green “head”.  This past week I have found them on our of Rose of Sharon bush.  The beetles like the blossoms best.   I pick them off and drop them in a jar with water that has detergent mixed in it.  They do bite and it stings (voice of experience) so I wear a plastic glove on one hand to pick the little pests off the blossoms.   They are very thick on some trees here in Central Illinois.  When people spray the trees the beetles fall and off and nearly cover the ground.

The sprays have cause health problems for some people.

While looking for a book I discovered a newspaper clipping in the back of the books.  I don’t remember cutting  (I usually date the article or clipping that I cut out but didn’t this one).   It is something I should try.   Getting rid of earwigs on plants:  Place 1 inch of soy sauce in a cottage cheese container, top with a thin film of vegetable oil; put on cover.  Punch three holes near top of container; set in flower bed or garden.   One of the vegetables that the earwigs like is the lettuce plant and I find a number of them when I clean the lettuce.  Perhaps it would be best to do this in the spring but I’ll try it this fall.

Wow!!!
Nothing like getting a fiinger when one is driving even though the other driver was not watching closely.   I stopped at a stop sign and I then I pulled slowly ahead to better see if traiffic was coming from the left and I stopped to take a good look to my left.   I wanted to turn right. I looked in my rear view mirror and she was giving me the finger.  Why does one assume you are going just because your started and not watch the driver does ahead of you.

On a happy note yesterday my sister who is in a nursing home was honored on her birthday by her stepdauther and stepson, grandson and her three sisters and one sister’s husband.    We brought in food for supper, with cake and ice cream.  She seemed to enjoy it very much.  She received two new outfits, pants and tops.

Father’s Day

June 19, 2006

Reading Tim Russert's book, WISDOM of OUR FATHERS, Made me think of My father who had 6 children under 11years old to raise after our mother died of double pneumonia before penicillium.  Fortunately his oldest sister was able to come and live with us and help raise us.  Father was determined to keep us together and He was able to with his sister's help.  Dad was a low key person and when he said something we knew he meant what he said.  He was not judgmental or gossip about people. He had ever reason to feel angry toward our grandmother, Mother's mother, who made him move off her farm about two year after mother died.  But he never talk ill of her.  Because of this I don't think any of us children disliked or hated her but we were never close to her.   Maybe because we did move away and didn't see her very often.

Cookout

May 31, 2006

May 29, 2006
Every two months a birthday party is planned for the residence who have or having a birthday during those two months.   Committees were formed for the year and each group then plans the party.  Each committee is free to plan refreshments and a program or whatever they come up with.  This time we will have a cookout at the community building which has a porch around three sides of the building. We'll also use the room inside.

Sunday I went to an open reception for a friend who was celebrating  her 90th birthday.   Someone asked me if I was her sister which would have been an honor but as my husband told a friend that I was twice 39 minus 1.   It is interesting that the older we grow our faces have similar lines.    I probably should have been hurt but I look in the mirror and wow what do I see,  a lady who no longer can pass for years younger.   That is all right as long as I am in good health and able to do many things.      I don't feel old at this point in my life.

May 23, 2006

This morning I had copies of a birthday invitation made and I delivered most of them to the community members in which I live.   While walking along the route to the different houses I enjoyed the beautiful weather: sunshine and the temperature that I really like.   I like it to be near 65-70, not to hot or not to cool.

On the trip around the circle I saw a number of beautiful flowers.  Now I should have a digital camera but that is in the future, soon I hope.  One of the flowers I especially like is a large deep purple Iris. I did have some but so far I don't see any, the area has become very shaded as our young trees have gotten very tall.  We have live here about 15 years when this place was first developed.

We like the shade on the west side as the house would get very warm in the late spring, through to fall.   So now I need to plant flowers that grow well in mostly shade.   I have planted three hosta plants last fall and they are growing but there is space for a number of other plants.

Frustration

April 21, 2006

April, 20, 2006

I will try again, I lost another writing about a week ago.  Here is part of what I had written.

Frustration,   frustration,  Frustration.
I wanted  to sew a hem in a pair of ladies slacks but the thread kept breaking.   Before that I had tried to sew a zipper in a fleece jacket and I broke the needle because The material was too thick.   So I replaced the needle to sew the hem but I just couldn't get it to sew the thread kept breaking.    Usually I can make the adjustment but for whatever reason I surely couldn't this time.   When I have more time, I'll work on it again and if I can't get it to work I'll need to take it out of the sewing cabinet and take it to a sewing repair store.

Several weeks ago four of us women went out of town to a home in the country for lunch.    It was a beautiful spring day.  On the way we came upon a small dog, black puppy or a small poodle, in the road that had been injured.   fortunately people were runnging from a side road to the dog and they took care of her/him.   We continued on our way and we could enjoy the gorgeous day and the flat land became hilly and rolling.  The home we came to was on a lovely lake.

This time of the year, one can look miles and miles across the fields(where the land is fairly flat) before the corn grows tall.

Love one in Hospital

April 4, 2006

 April 4, 2006
Hi,
This afternoon I'll try again to write after I lost my message two days ago.The past week I have spent a lot of time in the hospital with a sister who has blood clots in her right leg and right lung.   So far she is doing as good as expected.   Yesterday she went back to the nursing home where she has been for nearly six and half years.   She had several strokes and the last one paralyzed her left side. Yesterday I was at the hospital when she was dissmissed from there and taken back to the home in an ambulance.
Later today I will go to see her.

I did have a very good break when I went to Women's Retreat at our church camp in Illinois.

Sceretary work is not my cup of tea

Well I just finished a project that I least like.   That is to type up minutes for and organization I belong to.  Then I pasted it in an e-mail and hoping it will travel all right.

My term as secretary is up at the end of this year and will I ever be glad.   When I originally consented to be secretary we only met two times a year and now we are meeting four times a year.

With each typing project I am learning more about using the computer and I have much to learn.

One main learning experience is writing for my blog.  I always wanted to write but it is hard pulling words from my shuddered brain.

I’ll try very hard to write at least once a week to get started.

The snow Tuesday morning was very pretty.  Years ago when we would have a snow day in December I would have time to write and address my Chritmas Cards.

signing off.

Smoking

March 14, 2006

Some of my random thoughts on smoking and second- hand smoke

When I go visit a patient in the nursing home I see some who are there because of their smoking.  People who have had strokes, asthma or other related illnes from smoking still smoke.  It is very addictive and I think women have a much harder time stopping smoking.
I am very sad to say that a some one close to me iscc in the nursing home and still smokes after a couple of strokes which left her left side paralyzed.

The building is smoke free which is very good.  The smokers have areas outside where they can smoke.  Those areas get very messy.

Of course second hand smoke is hardful to people just as the person who is smoking.

Then I see the help who are mostly young women smoke and I want to say; look around you see what can happen to you.
